Miss Saigon, a modern Madame Butterfly, is the tragic love story of two people, victims of fate, whose lives are torn apart by the horror of war. Chris, an American GI, finds Kim, a 17-year old girl forced into prostituion after the death of her parents. They fall in love at first sight, but in the chaos of the fall of Saigon, are separated, leaving Kim with a child, Tam. Chris, after a year in sorrow after losing Kim (thinking she may even be dead), marries Ellen, and tries to reclaim the world he knew. But he can't escape Kim's memory. And Chris' friend John from Vietnam, who becomes a spokesman for Vietnamese-American children (Bui-Doi) left by soldiers in Vietnam, discovers through his agency that Kim is still alive and has a child. Chris, John, and Ellen go to Bangkok, where Kim, along with the Engineer , has gone, to try and help Kim. Kim knows her son will never amount to anything unless Chris and Ellen take him to America, and when they refuse to take her child away from her, she kills herself so that her son will have "whatever heaven grants."
